Senior Director of Development, Foundation Relations

The Senior Director of Development, Foundation Relations is responsible for leading a team of five development professionals in managing relationships with and identifying, cultivating, securing and stewarding philanthropic gifts from public and private foundations while interfacing and collaborating with colleagues across the Development Office and hospital leadership.
Reporting to the Managing Director of Development, Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Senior Director sets the strategic direction for the Foundation Relations team, oversees the team's efforts to maximize funding from foundations and proactively seeks new opportunities while adhering to complex compliance issues in gift designation and administration. They serve as a relationship manager for a set of 50 - 60 public and private foundations that support mission driven research and program areas and have the capacity to make gifts of $250K .
The Senior Director is the primary point of contact for foundation philanthropy and responsible for staying current with new trends and gift acceptance policies in foundation relations, advising leadership and other Development colleagues of evolving processes that affect philanthropic success and ensuring that foundation gift acceptance and processing practices are compliant with these trends and policies. The Senior Director is responsible for establishing an appropriate annual fundraising goal for the Foundation Relations team, tracking activity and success against the goal and managing and motivating staff to ensure that Mass General realizes optimal philanthropic funding from public and private foundations.
The ideal candidate will have proven leadership skills, be a collegial and entrepreneurial team player with a track record of raising philanthropic revenue, strategic program development and successful relationship and team management in a sophisticated organization. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Manage, mentor and support a team of five foundation fundraising professionals in identification, strategy building and solicitation activities. Assist Foundation Relations staff in developing, prioritizing, expanding and fully realizing the philanthropic potential of their portfolios
* Develop and oversee annual goals and program strategy for the Foundation Relations team:
* Ensure that each team member has clear and achievable goals within the context of team and individual performance goals for the year, is motivated, and has the tools to achieve success
* Work with the team to keep the focus of activity on opportunities of greatest impact, as well as for cross-departmental priority initiatives
* Monitor goal attainment through organizational achievement performance management metrics and timely completion of annual performance reviews
* Be responsible for producing team annual operating plans and tracking team activity toward assigned metrics on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
* Assist in planning, monitoring and managing of the Foundation Relations team budget
* Foster collaborations across the Development Office to enable productive, efficient and effective foundation fundraising and operational practices with special emphasis on major gifts, corporate strategies, donor relations, prospect management and research, and integrated marketing and communications
* Foster a trusting relationship between the Development Office and Mass General Brigham Research Management; oversee reconciliation of grants received
* Collaborate with the Managing Director to identify best foundation relations practices across academic medicine and recommend and manage projects toward implementing processes and systems consistent with best practices
* Work collaboratively with the Mass General Board and President's Council, volunteer leaders, Mass General president, MGPO CEO, SVPs, chiefs/physicians, researchers and administrative directors to identify and develop opportunities for foundation gifts and philanthropic grants to benefit Mass General priorities, programs, and faculty projects thereby fostering a positive culture of foundation philanthropy
* Oversee fundraising progress and communicate the team's strategy and activity internally, within the Development Office and across the hospital, and externally by representing Development in meetings, presentations and correspondence
* Actively manage and develop strategies for a portfolio with 50 - 60 public and private foundation prospects and donors generally capable of making gifts and grants of $250K or more. This includes:
* Formulate, document and execute prospect and donor moves management strategies
* Conduct donor meetings and prospect qualifications through both proactive and reactive donor identification and engagement
* Successfully solicit and close gifts and grants, working with hospital leaders and volunteers as appropriate to develop and produce compelling donor proposals
* Achieve a three-year average of raising between $5M-$6M annually from new and existing donors.
* Collaborate with colleagues across fundraising teams to achieve team and overall Development Office fundraising goals
* Fully document work in the donor database, Blackbaud CRM
* Work with prospects to develop and enhance the relationship to and connection with the hospital, ultimately leveraging that relationship to maximize philanthropic giving
* Mass General is currently in a $3 billion-dollar Campaign, therefore Campaign qualifications are expected
* Attend events as assigned and ensure that other appropriate hospital representation is in attendance
* Travel as necessary for prospect meetings, conferences, and events
* Participate in professional development
* Prepare and regularly update progress reports
* Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods
* Assist with recruitment activities as needed
* Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development leadership

This position requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum 10 years experience, with a focus on raising major gifts from foundations. The ideal candidate will have significant experience with and a comprehensive understanding of foundations and fundraising principles and practices, success managing a team, and a history of professional growth within an organization.

* Proven leadership and management skills
* A portfolio of positive relationships with and/or knowledge of major foundation executives, both nationally and internationally
* An understanding of Campaign fundraising
* Demonstrated ability to connect with faculty members and donors and be persuasive through written and verbal communication, including the ability to translate technical and science-based writing for a variety of audiences
* A comprehensive understanding of foundation fundraising principles and practices within an academic medical center and demonstrated success with solicitations involving grant or proposal writing
* Excellent organizational and project management skills
* Creativity and high levels of energy and enthusiasm

* Excellent presentation, writing, oral communication and interpersonal skills
