Position Summary
CVS Health is seeking an Executive Director to lead communications strategies and tactics in support of our health equity and research & partnerships efforts. Working with the Vice President of Communications for Medical Affairs & Digital, Data, Analytics and Technology you will lead the company’s communications strategic planning and execution in three key areas:1. Health equity communications, pulling the various enterprise and business-specific initiatives that address social determinants of health, health inequities and other barriers to care into a cohesive company narrative to act as the north star for all company health equity communications.
2. Women’s health communications, creating a company narrative that directs our clinical commitments to women’s health.
3. Research & Partnerships, bringing the Chief Medical Officers research & partnerships focus to life for key stakeholders.
You will also oversee ongoing refinement of the master narrative and messaging work for the leading health solutions company that delivers care in ways no one else can.
Your ability to partner with colleagues within communications and in other shared services functions – including Government Affairs, Human Resources, and Investor Relations – will be a critical success factor. Given the many pieces that feed into the areas outlined above, defining what matters and how it separates CVS Health from others will also be a critical component of the role.
Key responsibilities:
• Develop strategic communications plans leveraging paid, earned and owned media to advance the company’s reputation in the areas defined above.
• Partner closely with internal communications to build awareness and excitement around various initiatives, utilizing internal channels including the intranet, Colleague Resource Groups, etc.
• Work closely with other members of External Affairs team to anticipate potential issues, build effective issues management plans, and blunt reputational impact when necessary.
• Serve as strategic communications counselor and trusted advisor to key executives, including:
o Chief Medical Officer
o Chief Health Equity Officer
o Business unit Chief Medical Officers
o VP, Women’s Health and Geneomics
• Refine, maintain, and constantly look for ways to evolve the company narrative and enterprise messaging to reflect our unique role in health care; in addition, partner across the enterprise to push that narrative and messaging as appropriate using various channels.
• Manage agency partners.
• Develop relationships with media contacts covering areas defined above and serve as company spokesperson when appropriate.
• Lead and mentor team in effectively supporting leaders and delivering on strategic communications plans. Continuously adjust priorities and redeploy talent as needs evolve.
• Coach team members in building and executing development plans to enhance skills and competencies while driving career path aspirations.
Required Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with strong and varied communications backgrounds who can build collaborative and effective relationships with internal and external audiences, drive results, and advance the company’s reputation through storytelling.• 15 years relevant communications experience required; subject matter expertise in health care preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to distill key industry trends, recommend strategic actions, and share ideas and information across diverse audiences.
• High degree of professionalism and executive presence required to interface with executives on a regular basis.
• Strategic and analytical thinker, with superior problem-solving skills and the ability to execute near-term details with precision while advancing a broader, forward-looking strategy.
• Strong performance accountability orientation; ability to follow through on commitments, maintain confidentiality and meet deadlines in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
• Excellent time management, planning and organizational skills.
• Commitment to coaching and mentoring teams, creating a learning environment and fostering a culture of collaboration.
• Deep experience in serving as a strategic counselor to key executives and in building and leading high-performance communications teams preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate with other communication professionals toward a common goal.
