Dreamer or Visionary – Who Are You?

“Dreamer.” Oftentimes, this word is used to describe people who are out of touch. But consider for a moment what would happen, if no one were to dream anymore – where would we be then? Dreams help create expectations for the future, they open up new horizons, ideas and technologies. Companies that dream are oftentimes viewed as visionaries later on. While dreamers live in a fantasy world, visionaries work to bring their ideas to life. This trait was shared by both John F. Kennedy and Elon Musk.

Kennedy’s Vision: The Moon Landing

John F. Kennedy was able to transform his dream into reality during a speech at Rice University in 1962, when he announced his goal: by the end of the decade, he wanted to put a man on the moon, and bring him back to Earth again. The vision was made more powerful through his words:

„We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

From Kennedy, we learn that a successful idea begins with a vision, a vision that inspires and challenges.

Elon Musk’s Vision: A Colony on Mars

A populated colony on Mars might sound more like a science fiction film than reality. For Elon Musk, this lifelong dream is a real, true possibility. With his company Space X, the 44 year-old is bringing the aerospace industry to new heights. Already in 2018, an unmanned capsule is scheduled to land on the Red Planet. Manned flights are thought to be possible already in 2025, but this is still hypothetical.

But what’s most important is that Musk believes in making the impossible, possible. His ideas see the potential, the answer to our scarcity in resources. With the car company Tesla, he’s working to make cars that don’t require gasoline, and with SolarCity he finds ways to harness the energy of the sun, rather than oil or gas. This foresight makes him the most innovative dreamer, visionary and forward thinker in our time.
