Full disclosure: we won’t be able to break up with your job for you. (The mariachi band would’ve been a nice touch though, right?) But we can provide you with tips and helpful hints on how to part ways with your current employer.
1. Determine Why You’re Leaving
Before impulsively deciding to quit your job, analyze the root cause. Are you frustrated with your tasks; do you want something more challenging? Do you disagree with the corporate culture at your current company?
Or would you like to reorient your professional life and embark on a completely new career path? By considering why you’d like to leave your current position, you’ll be better equipped to find a new career opportunity that fits your needs.
2. Break The News Respectfully
Once you’ve decided to move on, consider the chain of command in your office. Who should you notify first? We recommend talking to any managers or executives that you work with, or report to directly. Show courtesy by informing them of your decision, and allow them the opportunity to speak their mind.
They may try to re-negotiate to keep you at the company, or they may also ask that you wait until a certain date to notify your team members or other employees. Discuss the details and do your best to end on a good note.
3. Cross Your T’s…
Now that you’ve officially given notice, aim to wrap up any projects you’ve been working on, and prepare a thorough handover for whichever team members may be taking over your responsibilities. (Ideally, you’ve been documenting your work processes throughout your tenure with the company… for tips on that, read more here.)
This is also the time to meet with your employees and offer two-way feedback – tell them about their strengths, and where they can improve, and allow them to do the same. This will benefit both parties for future growth.
