In this role you will lead the tax function for Steel Partners and its affiliates, directing both internal resources and external advisors to implement corporate tax policy while ensuring compliance across domestic and international jurisdictions. You will shape tax planning, oversee cross-border matters, and manage the tax reporting process to support accurate public disclosures. You will work closely with Legal, Finance, and Treasury to drive global tax initiatives and enable informed strategic transactions. This is a hands-on, high-impact leadership position in a dynamic, values-driven organization.
Responsibilities
- Manage global tax calendar and timely filings for corporate and partnership returns and K-1s
- Oversee determination and payment of Federal and State tax liabilities
- Direct oversight of outside tax advisors (planning, M&A, 382 analysis, etc.) including scope, timing, and fees
- Direct and improve company-wide tax planning practices and implement policies and procedures
- Organize tax records to support planning and efficient use of outside advisors
- Oversee tax basis of assets and cross-border taxation to minimize liability and ensure compliance
- Evaluate tax consequences of strategic transactions and communicate positions to management
- Support global tax initiatives with internal functions and outside advisors
- Oversee US GAAP tax provisions and ensure proper balance sheet presentation
- Monitor legislative developments and assess impact on the company
- Periodically evaluate and adjust tax structure to align with business needs
- Supervise internal tax staff and adequacy of expertise and resources
- Collaborate with Business Development on M&A activity, due diligence, structuring, and opening balance sheets
Key requirements
- 15+ years progressive taxation experience including domestic and international planning and compliance
- Command of all aspects of the tax function
- Experience managing multiple outside tax advisors
- Strong collaboration, communication, and executive presence
- Proven process orientation and track record of improving tax function efficiency
- Knowledge of tax considerations for publicly traded partnerships is desirable
- Bachelor's degree in accounting; CPA credentials desirable; Masters in Taxation preferred
