As an experienced DI Underwriter, you will underwrite complex cases end-to-end, balancing sound judgment with autonomy. You’ll support MassMutual Financial Advisors and field partners while upholding profitability and morbidity expectations. The role blends underwriting fundamentals with collaboration in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment. You’ll act as a subject-matter expert, training others and driving process improvements to deliver clear, customer-focused decisions. Responsibilities
- Serve as product and underwriting subject matter expert through field training and partner education
- Deliver competitive underwriting decisions that balance placement with profitability
- Provide guidance to agents, brokers, field staff, and partners on underwriting and risk matters
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly to support customer understanding and business outcomes
- Assess risks, gather relevant information, and make sound decisions in complex or ambiguous cases
- Build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective communication
- Drive continuous improvement by influencing process changes and supporting operational excellence
- Mentor and coach less experienced underwriters, offering technical guidance on complex issues
Key requirements
- 5+ years of underwriting individual disability insurance
- Minimum $15K approval authority in IDI underwriting
- Exams toward industry designations (e.g., DIA/DIF, AALU/FALU, FMLI) are preferred
