As an experienced IDI underwriter, you will assess and underwrite complex cases end-to-end, working with field partners while exercising independent judgment. You’ll contribute to a digital transformation and a customer-centric culture by delivering sound, profitable underwriting decisions. The role blends strong fundamentals with autonomy, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration to support MassMutual Financial Advisors and affiliated brokers. Responsibilities
- Underwrite complex individual disability insurance cases end-to-end
- Serve as a subject matter expert through training, events, and partner education
- Deliver competitive, profitable underwriting decisions while prioritizing business placement
- Provide guidance and exceptional service to agents, brokers, field staff, and partners
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly to support customer understanding
- Assess risks, gather information, and decide in ambiguous situations
- Build trusted internal and external relationships through effective communication
- Drive process improvements and support operational excellence
- Mentor less experienced underwriters with technical guidance
Key requirements
- 5+ years of underwriting individual disability insurance
- Minimum $15K approval authority in IDI underwriting
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
