In this role, you lead FEED activities for HDR’s Substation AD program, shaping the front-end engineering and design for high-stakes projects up to 500 kV. You’ll coordinate with cross-functional teams across engineering, marketing, and operations to manage risk, scope, schedule, and budget for AD delivery models. You drive technical leadership, develop templates and standards, and mentor dispersed substation teams to deliver high-quality, scalable designs. The position sits at the intersection of engineering excellence and program risk management, impacting HDR’s grid modernization and energy delivery initiatives. Responsibilities
- Lead technical aspects of substation AD proposals and projects, including risk analysis, preliminary layout, BOM support, and scope/schedule/budget development.
- Collaborate with engineering/design teams and staff from land survey, geotechnical, environmental, real estate, and GIS to support AD projects.
- Evaluate technical and commercial project risk from project intel and RFPs, informing Go/No-Go decisions.
- Engage in Go/No-Go discussions, risk assessments, SOQs, proposals, interviews, and negotiations as needed.
- Perform resource planning, workload forecasting, and staff assignments for AD projects; oversee multiple FEED teams as the program grows.
- Develop templates, standards, drawings, and procedures to support AD pursuits and projects, including database maintenance.
- Provide AD best-practice guidance to pursuit and project delivery teams; mentor discipline SMEs in substation areas.
- Collaborate with regional/area operations, market sector, practice, project, and commercial leaders to ensure world-class quality across engineering, environmental, real estate, GIS, and construction support.
- Maintain ongoing technical risk analysis and determine handoffs when projects mature.
- Support engineering and design development as needed and ensure consistency across teams.
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineering License
- Minimum 10 years of Substation design experience
- Minimum 5 years leading engineering teams on EPC projects
- Proficiency in CDEGS, BIM Software (Autodesk, Revit, Bentley)
- Minimum 5 years developing engineering scope, schedule, and budget estimates on EPC projects
- Experience developing EPC design and construction packages
- Experience with substation design up to 500 kV, including oneline and GA drawings, equipment selection
- Experience with value engineering and coordinating with vendors/subcontractors
- Strong leadership and remote-team management capabilities
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and conferencing platforms
- Willingness to travel up to 20%
