In this role, you join the Applied Software Group to build and improve the internal developer platform and tooling that accelerate a16z’s investing and operations teams. You own infrastructure, support observability, and help engineers self-serve in production. The role operates like an internal startup with close collaboration across teams, focusing on reducing friction and increasing developer velocity. You’ll work in SF office 2–3 days a week and shape the platform used by a diverse user base.

Responsibilities

Contribute to and improve the internal developer platform
Build and maintain shared tooling, templates, and internal libraries
Support observability, monitoring, and alerting for self-service in production
Collaborate with Cybersecurity to meet security/compliance requirements
Write and maintain developer documentation, onboarding guides, and runbooks
Ship iterative improvements based on user feedback
Own assigned projects/services from development to production support
Write clean, maintainable code
Foster inclusive collaboration and stay curious about new tools and approaches

Key requirements

3+ years of professional software engineering experience
Proficiency in Python 3, Rust or similar backend languages
Experience deploying services on at least one major cloud platform (GCP, AWS, or Azure)
Experience with containerized services (Docker); Kubernetes a plus
Exposure to CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, Cloud Build, CircleCI, or similar)
Experience with production SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL); NoSQL (Elasticsearch) a plus
Infrastructure-as-code concepts (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar) a plus
Experience shipping developer platforms or internal tooling that boosted engineering velocity
Ability to work with a diverse user group and varying technical backgrounds
Strong problem-solving skills and execution mindset
