As a Software Engineer in the Applied Software Group, you’ll own and evolve our internal developer platform and tooling to boost engineering velocity across the firm. You’ll work with cross‑functional teams in an internal startup environment, solving friction points and enabling faster, more reliable product delivery. You collaborate closely with engineers and other teams, shaping tools used firm‑wide while maintaining security and production readiness. This role offers the chance to impact how a16z builds software for investments and operations at scale.

Responsibilities

Improve and own the internal developer platform and tooling ecosystems
Closely review and support diverse use cases from internal users
Build and maintain shared tooling, templates, and libraries to accelerate development
Support observability, monitoring, and self-serve incident response for production
Collaborate with Cybersecurity to ensure secure, compliant workflows
Document developer onboarding guides, runbooks, and best practices
Iterate on improvements with user feedback; ship incrementally
Own assigned projects through development to production support with growing autonomy
Write clear, maintainable code and foster inclusive, energetic collaboration
Stay curious about new infrastructure and productivity tools and learn VC operations

Key requirements

3+ years of professional software engineering experience
Proficiency in Python 3, Rust or similar backend languages
Track record of defining and shipping developer platforms or internal tooling
Experience deploying services on major cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure)
Experience with containerized services (Docker); Kubernetes is a plus
Exposure to CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, Cloud Build, CircleCI, or similar)
Experience with production SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL); NoSQL (e.g., Elasticsearch) a plus
Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code concepts (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar) a plus
Experience working in fast‑moving environments; strong problem‑solving and collaboration
Low ego, high empathy, and ability to work with diverse teams
