In this role, you provide medical leadership for trauma and critical care services to ensure timely, high-quality patient care. You collaborate with the CMO, nursing, quality, and medical staff to align goals and drive performance improvements. You oversee clinical operations across ED, ICU, OR, and wards, shaping policies, programs, and education. You will lead cost-effective decision-making, quality benchmarks, and multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance trauma outcomes. This is a strategic, hands-on position that balances administration and direct clinical care to advance patient safety and service excellence.
Responsibilities
- Set service goals and build consensus with primary care physicians and specialists
- Collaborate to develop, review, and approve adult critical care policies and procedures
- Develop database and methods to monitor referral patterns to trauma/critical care units
- Assess and justify equipment, technology, and facility upgrades
- Lead cost containment initiatives for trauma and critical care services
- Chairs the Critical Care Committee
- Drive collaboration between medical and nursing staff
- Oversee quality improvement metrics and benchmark comparisons against national standards
- Provide oversight and education for residents, medical students, and fellows on trauma/critical care services
- Coordinate staff activities for inspections and accreditations
- Monitor risk management and patient safety measures and drive actions
- Support patient and physician satisfaction measurement and improvement initiatives
- Represent the department in communications with hospital leadership and external partners
Key requirements
- Board certification in general surgery and surgical critical care
- Five years of clinical experience in critical care and/or trauma
- Experience as Medical Director of Adult Critical Care or Trauma Services (preferred)
- MD or DO degree
- Eligibility for University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Medical Staff
- Experience with information systems and physician practice applications
- Ability to build consensus among physician groups and develop action plans
