In this role you will lead Arup's life sciences business development and technical delivery in Southern California, building a new San Diego Science hub. You will align with regional and national growth goals, nurture client relationships, and represent Arup at industry events. As Engineer of Record for medium-to-large life sciences projects, you will guide cross-disciplinary teams, manage budgets and schedules, and embed sustainable design. This is a high-impact leadership position shaping Arup's regional footprint and client impact.

Responsibilities

Lead development of Arup's science business in Southern California and establish the San Diego Science hub
Collaborate with West Science Leader and senior leadership to align growth plans and target key clients
Support business development, proposals, and client relationship growth with local knowledge
Represent Arup at local industry events as speaker or panelist
Grow opportunity pipeline by engaging with clients and partners locally
Lead mechanical/electrical engineering design for life sciences facilities as Engineer of Record
Manage multiple concurrent projects: planning, resourcing, scheduling, budgeting, and quality delivery
Serve as primary technical contact for clients and collaborators; facilitate meetings and design discussions
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to project teams
Integrate sustainable design principles and innovative engineering solutions
Negotiate contracts and conditions of engagement to optimize delivery and minimize risk
Regularly engage with West Science Leader and Business Development Lead to pursue key accounts
Measure success by client engagement, project opportunities, wins, and establishing the San Diego hub

Key requirements

Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering
Valid Professional Engineering license in California
15+ years of mechanical/electrical design experience for the built environment
10+ years delivering medium-to-large life sciences projects as Engineer of Record
Experience leading project teams and mentoring engineers
Track record growing a new office and winning work
Strong client relationship management and communication skills
Ability to manage project budgets, schedules, and resources
Familiarity with business development and proposal efforts
Experience integrating sustainable design into mechanical/electrical solutions
Experience working across multidisciplinary project teams
Exposure to national codes and standards relevant to Life Sciences facilities
