In this role you will identify patent opportunities within R&D and shape Evonik’s IP strategy to protect know-how. You will manage domestic and international IP rights, defend against third-party challenges, and advise on licensing and confidentiality in collaboration with the legal team. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to safeguard freedom to operate and support product launches and large-scale processes. The role offers international exposure, a focus on innovation, and a pathway to influence Evonik’s intellectual property posture.

Responsibilities

Identify patent opportunities in R&D aligned with business needs
Define, obtain, and enforce patents, trademarks, and designs domestically and internationally
Represent Evonik before authorities and courts
Challenge third-party IP rights and defend Evonik IP
Prepare expert opinions and evaluate IP positions pre- and post-launch
Contribute to IP strategies in cross-functional teams and safeguard know-how
Monitor compliance with patent, employee invention, and related laws
Advise on R&D contracts, licensing, and confidentiality agreements; negotiate IP-focused contracts
Review and approve new products, brochures, packaging, and publications

Key requirements

Studies in chemistry or chemical process engineering
Qualification before the European Patent Office or equivalent national patent office
Several years of experience in an industrial setting, preferably chemicals
Experience with universities/research collaborations; IP contract drafting desirable
Experience leading complex projects in interdisciplinary teams
Fluent English; French and/or German desirable
Strategic thinking, negotiation, and strong customer orientation; initiative and flexibility
Strong communication and teamwork in an international environment
