As Berklee’s General Counsel, you will serve as the chief legal officer and strategic advisor to the President and senior leadership. You will oversee legal matters across programs and activities, balancing policy, risk, and strategy in a complex higher-education setting. You’ll lead governance, regulatory compliance, and critical partnerships while guiding the institution through evolving technology, intellectual property, and labor matters. This is a mission-driven opportunity to shape Berklee’s legal framework and global priorities in a dynamic, creative environment.

Responsibilities

Advise the President and senior administration on legal, policy, and risk issues
Formulate and implement Berklee’s legal and litigation strategy; advise on governance matters and board participation
Provide guidance on a broad range of legal topics including student affairs, data privacy, IP/tech, employment law, and tax
Lead enterprise risk management with cross-department collaboration
Provide leadership in labor matters and engagement with unions
Support strategic partnerships to advance Berklee’s mission and global priorities
Oversee crisis prevention and response strategies
Supervise Contract Management and represent Berklee in transactions as needed
Monitor legal developments and regulator trends relevant to Berklee
Manage outside counsel relationships and oversee policy development and procedures

Key requirements

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
Bar admission in good standing; Massachusetts license within one year of hire
Experience at the intersection of technology, higher education, and the creative arts
Expertise in intellectual property and large commercial transactions
Experience with boards of trustees, governance, and fiduciary duties
Experience managing attorneys and outside counsel
Knowledge of Title IX, FERPA, Clery Act, Higher Education Act preferred
