Experteer Overview
As General Counsel, you lead the Augusta Law Department and steer legal strategy for a large, complex city-county government. You will partner with the Mayor, Board, and department heads to advance priorities, manage risk, and uphold public trust. You’ll provide proactive legal counsel, represent officials and staff, and ensure legal compliance across the organization. This role offers a substantive opportunity to shape municipal governance and modernize a high‑performing law department.

Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations of the Law Department and foster a high-performance, service-oriented culture
- Provide proactive legal counsel to the Mayor/Commission, County Administrator, and boards/authorities
- Attend public meetings to guide agenda items, parliamentary issues, and compliance
- Represent officers and employees in court and administrative proceedings
- Manage budgets, outside counsel, and risk mitigation aligned with priorities
Key requirements
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution
- Seven (7) years of legal experience, including at least four (4) years in local government
- Active member of State Bar of Georgia, Georgia Court of Appeals, and Georgia Supreme Court, or eligible to practice in Georgia
- Substantial litigation experience and expertise in municipal law
- Budget management and supervisory experience
