As Manager II/Chief, you will lead the Division of Commercial Building Construction, guiding plan reviews, permits, inspections, and building-code compliance. You’ll set strategic direction, policy, and ensure consistent interpretation of codes to safeguard public safety and property. You act as the building official with final authority on county code interpretation and coordinate with other divisions and agencies. This role offers high-impact leadership in a regulatory, customer-facing environment and a chance to shape how the county partners with communities and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Direct the Division of Commercial Building Construction and oversee plan reviews, permit issuance, inspections, and related activities
- Provide building code interpretation and ensure compliance to safeguard public safety and property
- Develop strategic direction, goals, and department programs; delegate assignments and be accountable for results
- Develop and recommend policy for the Department and division; ensure consistent code interpretation
- Serve as building official with final authority on code interpretation and development regulations in the County
- Represent the Department on committees, boards, and with external stakeholders; coordinate with other DPS divisions and government agencies
- Coordinate cross-divisional and interagency collaboration to support regulatory compliance and service delivery
- Oversee supervision and management of technical staff in a regulatory/construction environment
- Engage with external partners to communicate and implement industry best practices in building codes and fire code compliance
- Address related responsibilities as required
Key requirements
- Seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in construction, building, plan review, inspections, and/or fire code enforcement operations
- Three years of supervisory or executive capacity
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Equivalency: an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted
- Financial Disclosure requirement; pre-employment Medical History Form
- Must be considered an Essential Employee during emergencies
