The Position Description –

The Department of Safety Assessment at Genentech provides scientific leadership and plays a critical role in the process of drug discovery and development from early-stage discovery through marketed products. We are seeking an Associate Scientist/Scientist as a project toxicologist to support small molecule drug discovery and early clinical development. This role will involve working in a collaborative environment as part of the comprehensive safety assessment team on programs across all therapeutic areas at Genentech.  The focus of this role will be to support our small molecule discovery teams from early stage research to candidate nomination as the project toxicologist.  In addition, the individual will also have opportunities, where appropriate, to serve as a project toxicologist on other modalities and programs at later stages in drug development.

Individuals will proactively assess risk of potential toxicity issues related to undesired or exaggerated pharmacology and other investigation or characterization of potential toxicity issues to enable small molecule lead optimization and candidate nomination. In this role, the toxicologist will provide representation to discovery project teams, which will include safety target assessments, strategic planning and designing, implementing and supervising toxicology studies in support of compound lead optimization (e.g. in vitro toxicity screening, counter-assay development, and in vivo toxicity assessment).  In addition, toxicologist will partner with pathologists and investigative toxicologists to facilitate mechanistic investigations (development of hypothesis-driven research plans, in vitro or in vivo model development and qualification, and scientific project management). The toxicologist will interact closely with research scientists, regulatory/development toxicologists, and pathologists to ensure that discovery teams consider all of the appropriate strategic needs for candidate identification with regard to non-clinical safety.  As a result, the individual will direct better candidate selection and characterization of toxicology issues at the time of transition to early development.

Who You Are: Qualifications –

A PhD and post-doctorate or equivalent experience in immunology, neurobiology, infectious

disease, cellular/ molecular biology, toxicology or related field is required. The candidate

should have some experience in drug discovery/development, very solid scientific abilities

including problem-solving skills, and have demonstrated significant accomplishments in the

area of relevant hypothesis-driven work and impact.  In addition, candidates should have excellent ability to work with teams, strong communication (both verbal and written), interpersonal and managerial skills, and evidence of adaptability and fast learning. Looking for individuals with 1-3 years for Associate Scientist or 3-5 years for Scientist of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or CRO industry related to toxicology.
